In 2013, the Rotterdam based Ro Theater is presenting their interpretation of West Side Story. The canine-themed family musical, entitled Woef Side Story comes complete with giant dog puppets and ass-sniffing scenes. The show’s tagline translates to “Romeo & Juliet, doggy style”.

This sculpture, found Rotterdam’s city center, was created by American sculptor Paul McCarthy. The sculpture, which is supposed to depict Santa Claus holding a Christmas tree and bell, has been moved several times due since its unveiling due to the controversy over its suggestive nature. It should come as no surprise that Rotterdammers have nicknamed it kabouter buttplug, which roughly translates to The Butt Plug Gnome.

Space Invaders: The Third Wave…
Another batch of alien invaders that I’ve recently discovered around the city. Every Amsterdam local has seen at least one or two of these mosaics stuck to buildings or bridges. These creatures have “invaded” Amsterdam since 2000. Though some of the original 26 have disappeared over the years, many of the “first wave” still exist and some new ones have since shown up at new locations.

The Amsterdam Euro is an impromptu art project by Onnie Cleary as a means to add variety to the otherwise standardized Eurozone banknotes. According to Cleary, Amsterdam Euro’s are only legal tender when paying for cannabis, cannabis-related products or sexual services from prostitutes in the Amsterdam area. The sketches are in pencil and can be erased to convert the bills back into standard Euro’s.

The Spuistraat in downtown Amsterdam is the regional epicenter for the squatter movement and, as such, offers (graffiti) artists a unique canvas on which they can let their creativity loose. This post highlights some of the more prominent faces along the street.

The DHL Express Canal Delivery Boat is probably the only one of its kind. It is seen here docked near Amsterdam Central Station (visible in the background to the right).
